Why should we host an sb2w Day camp at our church?
Summer’s Best Two Weeks is far more than just a fun sports camp. It is appealing to
how much does it cost the church?
The camp is designed to be a significant ministry activity of the church (see site responsibilities below), but zero direct impact on the church budget. Resurrection Community Church collects all the camp tuition fees and pays all the direct camp expenses (counselor salaries, food, equipment, etc.) Separate from the direct costs of camp, if your church missions committee (or equivalent) would be interested in supporting the overall mission of SB2W Tidewater, we would love to talk with them!
What does SB2W Tidewater provide?
SB2W Tidewater provides a team of trained senior counselors along with all the program materials and equipment. We handle all the registrations and payments, and basic advertising. We provide training for junior counselors and support and advice for the site director.
What is the site church responsible for?
The site church provides the physical space, a site director, host families, and some other volunteers. The site director is typically a church staff member, but could be a highly committed volunteer. That person is expected to recruit and manage church volunteers, coordinate with the SB2W Tidewater team, interface with parents, and be fully present during the time of camp. Host families welcome out-of-town senior counselors to live in their homes during the week or two of camp. The number of other volunteers required depends on the overall size of the camp, but the main volunteer role is junior counselors, teens who serve alongside the college-age senior counselors to lead the squads throughout the day. Other adult volunteer roles are lunch-makers (for the counselors), check-in/check-out, and special activity leaders (like crafts or helping out with meets or overnights)
Would we have one week or two?
That’s largely up to each individual site. Many of the core activities and the fundamental concepts are the same, but two week camps include swimming, an overnight camping trip, and a track meet and a swim meet. More significantly, two week camps give campers and counselors more time to build relationships with one another and can have a much bigger life impact. That said, two week camps are a bigger investment from the church in terms of space and staff and volunteer time.
what facilities are needed?
We can actually make camp work in a variety of different spaces and settings. Indoors, we typically need a gathering space that can hold the full camp, space for lunch and activities like wrestling and tumbling, and a few separate classrooms for small group Bible times. Outdoors, we need some field space either on the church property or within walking distance (schools or parks), and some parking lot/black top space for things like hockey and basketball. For two week camps, we also work with you to figure out transportation to a swimming pool and sometimes to a track and a campsite for overnights (these are sometimes done on the church property)
Will this bring new visitors to our church?
Possibly, but not necessarily. We believe in the fundamental importance of the local church and encourage every site church to connect with the families that come and invite them to further year-round connection. That said, we see SB2W a valuable ministry in and of itself planting and watering kingdom seeds and serving the local community, regardless of whether it brings new families specifically into a particular site church
